Raising a child with special needs comes with unique challenges, but learning to swim doesn’t have to be one of them. At LowCountry Swim School, we believe swimming is a life skill® that makes children safer and happier.
We offer private swim lessons for children with unique needs, including autism, sensory challenges, ADHD, physical disabilities, and more. Swimming not only improves safety, but it can also be therapeutic—helping with sensory overload, providing a sense of weightlessness, and relieving physical discomfort. Lessons also support balance, coordination, strength, and range of motion, while often boosting confidence and self-esteem.
All children should learn water safety and how to swim when possible. Drowning is the #1 cause of accidental death in children with autism, and many kids are naturally drawn to pools, lakes, and even bathtubs. Swim lessons provide a safe, gentle way to build strength, increase lung capacity, and teach essential water skills.
Children with special needs process the world differently and benefit from flexible, child-focused teaching. Our LowCountry Swim School Certified™ Instructors have experience with a variety of needs, including:
Before your child’s first lesson, we’ll discuss your family’s goals, learn about your child’s abilities, and answer any questions. You can even meet the team beforehand. Then we’ll create a customized teaching plan and match your child with an instructor who’s the right personality fit.
While we do not directly offer tuition support for swimming lessons for special needs children, we do partner with third-party organizations that may be able to help. We’d love to welcome your child to swim class, so please get in touch with our team to learn more.
