Swim Lessons vs Swim Team

What each one is for, and the steps in between for kids who want to race.

Parents ask us whether their child should keep taking swim lessons or join a swim team. Swim lessons teach a child to be safe in the water and to swim the strokes. A swim team trains swimmers who can already swim, and it races.

What swim lessons cover

Here's how Levels 1 to 5 build in our Tween to Teen program for ages 8 to 15. The full breakdown for every age is in swim lesson levels explained.

1

Level 1

Water safety and floating introduction.

2

Level 2

Basic strokes and water safety.

3

Level 3

Stroke strengthening and treading water.

4

Level 4

Flip turns and endurance building.

5

Level 5

Diving and stroke technique refinement.

What a swim team expects

A swim team is built around regular practice and meets. Each team sets its own expectations for new swimmers, so ask the coach what your child needs to be able to do before a tryout.

The steps in between

Stroke Development

Ages 5 to 16. Refines freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly with detailed feedback and drills.

Competitive Development

Ages 5 to 16. Structured levels, benchmarks like swimming 50 meters without stopping, two sessions a week, and mock swim meets.

Jr. Clinic

Ages 5 to 7. The youngest group in Competitive Development, with 30-minute sessions.

Swim to Fitness

For advanced swimmers who can swim 100 meters without stopping and want endurance training.

Signs your child could be heading toward a team

  • They can swim 50 meters without stopping, one of our Competitive Development benchmarks
  • They're working on all four strokes
  • They've reached flip turns and endurance building, which is Level 4
  • They keep asking to race

If your child isn't there yet, keep going with lessons. Our guide to moving up a swim level explains what instructors look for.

Water safety still applies

A strong pool swimmer still needs supervision in open water, on docks and at the beach. See the layers of protection every family needs.
